Music For Relaxation

As a longtime massage therapist, I am always searching for new relaxing, beautiful music to add to my playlist because as you could imagine.. I hear the same things over and over again. Over the years I have noticed that I’ve gotten much more picky about which songs or albums to buy. My standards have become this – the tracks can’t be too busy or have any fast build ups, have any vocals in English, or be to cheezy like ‘new age music’ can be. I tend toward world music artists that have a spiritual feel. Here are my top 5 albums for relaxation, yoga, meditation, reading or even to get inspired. All are available on itunes!

1) Night Book – Ludovico Einuaudi

2) The Spirit of Yoga – Ben Leinbach

3) Shamanic Dream 2 – Anugama

4) Music for Yoga and Other Joys – Ben Leinbach & Jai Uttal

5) Voice of the Esraj – Benjy Wertheimer

Desert Blues

Tinariwen, ‘Tassili’

As a lover of world music I was floored when I first heard a track from this album while listening to KCRW. Tinariwen, the Saharan, nomadic blues-rock group’s new album Tassili strides across several genres to produce something so unsettling and so good that you just might feel you are hearing something in music for the first time, something from the cellar of your heart.

For this release they’ve invited in a few friends as well. Nels Cline contributes a beautiful guitar to opener “Imidiwan ma Tennam”, two members of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band add rough texture to “Ya Messinagh”, and TV on the Radio’s Kyp Malone and Tunde Adebimpe, who traveled out to the desert recording site, are on hand on five songs, adding subtle backing harmonies and even a bit of lead vocal on one song.

A world music favorite this year and a strongly recommended must buy! Also, don’t miss them live if you get the chance.  For more info click here!

I am always searching for new world music, if you know of a great album that you think I should check out please share!

The Sitar Star

The super talented and amazing Anoushka Shankar does it again with her latest release, ‘Traveler’. By far one of the best, stunning and original world music albums of the year!  Anoushka amazes as she explores the links between Indian music and Spanish flamenco, the result of ancient Gypsy migration. This collaboration allows her to demonstrate her inspired instrumental work in the company of Indian musicians and the flamenco elite, including the producer and guitarist Javier Limón.

Unfortunately she just concluded her world tour, but you can still enjoy the music!  For more info click  HERE
